Square 5! Crochet Along Afghan Sampler (May)

Solid Scallop: Square 5 (May) of the 2015 Afghan Sampler -- Crochet along and have a finished blanket at the end of the year! | The Inspired Wren

It's time for Square 5 (May) of the Crochet Along Afghan Sampler, Solid Scallop. Square five of ten -- we're halfway there! WOO HOO!

If you're just finding the Crochet Along Afghan Sampler, don't let that halfway mark discourage you, there is plenty of time to join in! We're hooking up 20 squares in 10 stitches by the end of the year. Be sure to START HERE to plan your yarn and color scheme, then feel free to crochet the squares in any order you please. Just be sure to carefully label your squares as you go so it will be easy peasy, lemon squeezy to join them at the end.

Smart! Label crochet squares as you go. Crochet along Afghan Sampler 2015 | The inspired Wren
The more squares we hook, the more important it is to label as you go!

SQUARE 5, MAY

This fifth square is another reversible fabric with a lovely hooking rhythm. I love me those stitches I can create without incessant counting. And I'm on a mission now to keep each square reversible. I discovered the solid scallop at Lion Brand Yarns Stitchfinder and did not vary from their stitch except for length and height counts. The fabric creates lovely fans without a lacy appearance, and has a soft drape similar to the baby bubbles of Square 3. It is worked with five double crochet in one stitch, skip two, single crochet...and repeat. The fans of one row will nest in the single crochet stitches of the previous, and the single crochet stitches will land on top of the fans. Like so...

HOMEWORK

Keep on hooking! To keep up, you'll want to have ten (10!) finished squares (in five different stitches) completed by Tuesday, June 30 (release date for Square 6, June). Note, there's an extra Tuesday in June but the square will still release on the last Tuesday -- that gives you an extra week to catch up if you need it. See, totally doable. As advertised. Don't forget to upload your progress to our Flickr Group and tag your Instagram shots with #afghansampler so we can all be impressed by your fabulous crochet skills!
