Kids Clothes Week, Day 4

It Kids Clothes Week! In honor of KCW, and for just this week only, I will attempt to blog daily and document all sewing [through mostly cell-phone pics].

Kids Clothes Week: Sew clothes for your kids. One hour a day. Each day for seven days.

This afternoon I was able to complete an entire pair of cropped jeans for Project Run and Play. It helped that I had already cut them out on Day 2.

How fabulous is that green pocket-lining and top-stitching? Bonus view of my week old, sewing machine induced, thumb blood blister.

But let's go back and see how they came together. These Oliver + S After-School Pants are among my favorites; this is my third time sewing them since the birth of this very young blog. First up are the pockets. All four of them.

Here you can see that fabulous green lining the front pockets. And my very favorite sewing tool: a chopstick purchased with its twin in the 90s from Pier One Imports to be used as a chopstick, long since re-purposed into my sewing toolbox.
Front pocket. Times two.

Back pocket. Times two.

I love me some contrast top-stitching and this pattern is perfect for it.

The twin-needle got a work-out today.

My favorite chopstick even doubles as my second spool-pin.

And then I got this sudden surprise on a seemingly smooth line. Luckily I had a back-up.

Lovely legs awaiting further assembly.

I've talked (okay, bragged a smidge) on this blog about my love of finishing the innards of a garment to be as lovely as the outside. Today I spent a lot of time pinking. Not my favorite finishing technique, but it is quick and the stretch-denim was heavy.

Lots and lots of pinking today.
Look how perfectly the top-stitching meets on that center seam. The other two times I sewed this pattern I did not show this detail for a reason (read: didn't happen).

Then I managed to get these on my model to be sure the elastic was right. It wasn't, too loose. We have a habitual issue with all pants falling off The Peanut's hips, even after I fit them to size. I swear she stretches overnight like a Gumby -- taller and thinner all in one pull -- making her waist shrink daily.

I fixed the waistband elastic, hemmed the bottoms, and they are done!

You'll have to come back next Tuesday to see the final reveal of these pants as part of my Project Runway Week 4 solution! In the meantime be sure to check out the Inspire Us Thursdays! link party, and share what you've been up to, too.

You should really see all that goes into each project!
From my model preferring to wear washi tape on her belly button instead of the clothes I've sewn for her, to my stress every time I'm in the button aisle. Daily updates on Instagram (and Flickr) of works-in-progress will give you that behind the scenes view you’re looking for, and sneak peeks of First Tuesday Tutorials, too.
