Designing for Easter

Finally! Done. And photographed. Project Run & Play Week #3, Design My Own Fabric:

She really wanted this week's photo-session chocolate and was willing to be posed like a delicate lady in order to get it.

Project Run & Play Week #3, Design Your Own Fabric Challenge: Print, dye, color, paint, stencil or whatever else you can think of to design a fabric that is all you and then use that material to create an outfit!

For my final solution (aka: back-up plan because my original attempt to create white sheer plaid didn't work in the time allotted) I created my own irregular-striped fabric for a lovely spring-green Easter dress. [Be sure to check out the bottom of the post for all the usual pattern and fabric details.]

For a back-up solution, I'm pretty pleased with the final result.

I was worried that the green and white alone would be too flat even after I color-blocked the bodice. So I reached into the palette of my Project Run & Play Mini-Collection and added the turquoise in the piping, the buttons, the bow, and the underskirt. I love the way the lined bodice plus the underskirt make the inside of the dress so beautifully finished.

I almost left the bow off to keep a truly tailored look; but I'm glad I didn't. I like the shine of the ribbon next to the texture of the linen.

Obligatory, artsy up-skirt shot.

The innards of the dress look great; this could almost be reversible, no?

Since it only stopped snowing last week(!), I thought it would be wise to be prepared with a cover for those sleeve-less arms. At the last minute (ahem, today, in case you were wondering how I spent my Kids Clothes Week time), I swapped out the planned green-crochet sweater for this pop-of-color in the form of a ruffled cardigan. Still thinking of mix & match separates throughout all of Project Run & Play, I made sure this cardi could easily top the white blouse from Week 2.

I typically eschew ruffles, but I like the contrast (and softness they add) next the the hard stripes.

Luckily, the cardi came together quickly.

Unfortunately my model has been a bit under the weather this week, but she perked up at the idea of surprises in the eggs. And will always sit still for a good read.

The blue skirt, white tights, and black shoes unexpectedly read Alice in Wonderland to me -- in a darling way.

No pockets meant the chocolate was hidden among the eggs. She was determined.

...and then I lost her to her books.

The full skirt plus bow of The Perfect Party Dress pattern. It's so very Little Girl perfect.

You should really see all that goes into each project!
From my model preferring to wear washi tape on her belly button instead of the clothes I've sewn for her, to the ingenious way that I’ve re-purposed my favorite sewing tool, a chopstick, into a spool pin for double needle sewing on my machine. Daily updates on Instagram (and Flickr) of works-in-progress will give you that behind the scenes view you’re looking for, and sneak peeks of First Tuesday Tutorials, too.
